Print Pattern: JuneBug Pie

     This quilt is in memory of my grandfather, Carl Ice. When I got the prompt for the Love of Quilting Submissions, it said they were looking for Patterns with fun stories about families, reunions, summer picnics, and similar things. Being from a huge extended family, I have tons of stories, but none so great as the June Bug Pie. I don’t remember who baked the pie, but it was my grandpa who was eating. 

     He said it was delicious. Freshly picked berries made up the filling. He looked down at the next bite and nearly screamed when he saw an actual June bug inside the pie! Apparently it had been missed in cleaning the berries and was baked right into the pie. Every time he ate any pies after that, he’d always ask, “There’s no June bugs in this pie, are there?” So the title of this pattern basically came before the actual pattern.

     I was originally aiming for a table runner that could be used at future family reunions. I knew I wanted wonky stars to represent all the eccentric family members. I started with a single star in the middle of the block, and ended up with four partial stars around it, surrounded by strips of gooey pie filling and golden crust. After I completed my 28"x 84" project and spread it out on the table, I realized it was far too big for most tables, and draped it over the bed instead. 

     The blocks are each 28" and can be used alone, or with other blocks. With only one block of Junebug Pie and some borders makes a good size doll or small pet quilt, and using 9 of them with a wide border can make a king size quilt! This block is a fun block to make, and so versatile.
