Disappearing 9 Patch
A versatile and interesting pattern for absolute beginners!
1/10/20261 min read

Disappearing 9 Patch was one of the first patterns I ever made, and I recommend it to beginners. It is fairly easy to do, but it looks far more difficult than it is. The basics, are that you make a 9-patch block, or a block with 3 rows of 3 equal size blocks. These could range anywhere from 2” to 30” or even bigger! After you sew the 9-patch together, you cut it in 4 pieces. Halfway down the middle both directions.
Note: This is just for the traditional 9 patch. There are methods where you can cut it differently to get drastically different results, but for this pattern, it’s just simple, straight down the middle.
After you have your 4 pieces of your block, you rearrange them and sew them back together. it’s fun to rearrange everything and see the results. In this 13-page PDF, I illustrate 4 different layouts and 4 different color schemes, giving you 16 different looks.
It will make a quilt that’s 45” x 45,” which is the size I use for baby gifts. it’s also great for toddlers, and lap throws for older children and small adults. My version uses 9 fat quarters, and 3 yards of backing, as well as some binding strips. It’s fairly cheap, and it’s stunning. I’ve never met a disappearing 9-patch that i didn’t love.
